About Certification
What is the difference between Qualified MBTI® Practitioner and Certified MBTI Practitioner? Both allow the practitioner to purchase and use the MBTI instrument. However, certified practitioners are held to higher standards and must meet additional requirements. These additional requirements protect and enhance the use of the instrument and protect the public. One must first become a qualified practitioner with at least one year of experience in the ethical use of the MBTI instrument before being eligible to apply to become a Certified Practitioner.

Qualified practitioners of the MBTI instrument may use the Indicator and purchase restricted MBTI materials. Such practitioners recognize a variety of concepts relevant to the MBTI instrument which include understanding tests and measurements, type terminology based on C. G. Jung's and Myers-Briggs' psychological type theory, type dynamics and development; following guidelines for administration, scoring, and interpretation of the instrument; and recognizing ethical guidelines for using it. Certified MBTI Practitioners must meet the basic requirements of the qualified practitioner and in addition are held to higher standards which include additional education and practical experience. This additional training offers the general public a mechanism by which they can better distinguish the skill level of the practitioner.

History of the Certification Program
A task force from six Qualifying Training Providers in the United States was charged by CPP, Inc. with the responsibility of developing guidelines and standards of excellence to be used in the certification process. The decision to develop a certification program grew from the many qualified MBTI practitioners who expressed the need to:

  • encourage individual professional growth
  • expand skills in the use of the MBTI instrument
  • create a positive image and advance the stature of effective MBTI practitioners
  • emphasize the knowledge and expertise required to excel in the applications of the MBTI instrument, and
  • identify those professionals who have attained a high level of competence and professionalism

Why Become a Certified Practitioner?
The standards of excellence set out for certification applicants, once met, offer the qualified MBTI practitioner the opportunity to become MBTI certified. The certified professional will be recognized as someone who has advanced skills in the interpretation and use of the MBTI instrument.

Certified MBTI Practitioners will:
  • be included in a respected group of professionals who have a proven commitment to the ethical use of the MBTI instrument
  • demonstrate the highest level of excellence in knowledge, competence, and skill in the interpretation and use of the Indicator
  • add value to their professional standings with a credential that represents depth of understanding and a commitment to learning
  • offer clients and employers the ease of mind that comes from knowing they have selected an MBTI practitioner who has successfully met the requirements of a respected credential

The Certification Program began on May 1st 2001 with Charter Certification. MBTI Charter Certification was available to those individuals who were Qualified prior to December 31, 2000. Individuals who are MBTI Qualified Practitioners with at least one year of experience in the ethical use of the MBTI instrument and have taken 20 hours of MBTI training, can apply for MBTI Standard Certification. If the practitioner meets those initial educational requirements then they can apply for Certification. On the application they must show six instances of use with type in at least two of the following four areas: use of the instrument with groups; use of the instrument with an individual; the presentation of an MBTI workshop; the completion of a thesis or dissertation using the MBTI instrument or the publication of research using the MBTI instrument. These are outlined in the Certification application package.

As part of the requirements for maintaining MBTI certification, practitioners will need to accumulate continuing education credits over their first three (3) years as a certified practitioner.

How long will I be certified?
The initial certification period is three (3) years. During that time, the certificant is expected to continue his or her education and experience with the MBTI instrument. A minimum of twenty (20) credits will be required for re-certification and re-certification application will take place every three (3) years. One contact hour of approved training and/or approved experiential activities equals one continuing education credit. At least ten of the 20 credits must be in person-to-person/interactive training that permits the certificant to demonstrate and receive feedback on presentation and interpretation skills.

How can I earn continuing education credits?
Providers will offer various approved activities including, but not limited to, classroom training, on-line training and activities, home study, conferences, and many other easy-to-access activities that will enable MBTI Practitioners to conveniently accumulate the required credits. All training and activities are designed to meet one or more of the eight standards for certification. The provider is responsible to identify which standard(s) is being met with each offering. Certificants are expected to meet all eight standards through continuing education, but not all eight are required in a single approval period.

Cost
Certification is for a period of three (3) years. The initial application fee is $65 plus $45 per year for a total of $200.
